Dispatch From The Commune (Lucky) #13: Who Wants To Live With An Itinerant Artist?

Lest you think that the title of this entry means that we’re going to be hosting some kind of crazy reality show game show, we’re not.  BUT, our most recent Itinerant Artist, BRIAN, will be needing a new apartment as of January 1st.  If you, or anyone you know, is looking for a wonderful roommate, please email revolvingdoorcommune@gmail.com with your lead(s). He’s much too cute to be homeless! 🙂

Brian is leaving, because LIZ is returning, and The Commune is going back to the original room configuration!  Liz is doing much better as far as her leg is concerned, and while she’s still building her leg muscles and wearing a big, black boot, she’s walking completely on her own and is less hobbly now than she ever has been.  EMILY continues to drown in law books, but it’s a small price to pay for Itinerant Artists and Commune Cohorts to have someone to get them out of future legal troubles.

ADAM is doing his best to stave off the winter doldrums, and while life has thrown him several curve balls recently, he has survived by watching lots of Doctor Who (he’s now the proud owner of all four series of New Who on DVD) and working on his next short story, which will be unveiled to the rest of the Studio Square Table (the writing group he’s in with Teresa, Jean, and Alex) very soon.

TERESA hasn’t been sleeping very well.  In addition to working furiously on The Pack and trying to make passes at her novel (the short story she shared with the Studio Square Table is on hold for the moment, as it requires a full rewrite), she’s recently been made the NY Geek Culture Examiner at Examiner.com!  What does this mean?  This means that she gets paid for what she writes!  However, she doesn’t get paid unless people click on her articles, read them, comment on them, and spread the links around.  Feel free to do any, or all of those things, as she’d quite enjoy being paid for her words, Thank You Very Much.  She is also a glutton for punishment and has decided to enter the 2010 NYC Midnight Short Fiction Contest despite losing their Flash Fiction contest. She’s hoping that more words = greater success.

LINDSAY has been fighting not only the winter doldrums, but the willfulness of two small children.  While she had a small reprieve this past week with Teresa coming in to play acting coach for the younger girl (who has auditioned for a musical!) so that she could work more easily with the older boy, there is still plenty of willfulness left to be battled.

DIANA recently followed up Thanksgiving and celebrating her birthday with minor surgery (if surgery can ever be considered minor) on her hand to repair damage sustained in a freak knife accident.  She is now wearing some pretty awesome bandages and will hopefully heal soon.  Meanwhile The Commune has ordered that no other Itinerant Artists hurt themselves!  Between Lindsay burning her face in the oven last year, Liz breaking her leg this year, and Diana’s hand surgery, SEBASTIEN, Teresa and Adam are starting to quake in their boots wondering which of them will be next!

That’s all for this installment of the Dispatch!  Stay tuned for more news about your favorite Commune!

Dispatch From The Commune #12 – Dude, Where’s My Itinerant Artists?

dude_wheres_my_car

We’re right here!  Sorry it’s taken so long for an update.  I know, I know, you’ve been chomping at the bit for more info.  Here it is:

LIZ has gotten her cast off, and she is hobbling around the streets of Brooklyn in her supportive boot like a pro!  However, EMILY’S having foot surgery this weekend, and will be hobbling about.  As one puts down the crutches, the other picks them up.  It’s either crazy happenstance, or some kind of intense crutch fetish they’ve got going on.  Liz has also been kicking the ass of schoolwork,  and Emily recently received an A on her first law school memo!  We’re all super proud!

Sadly, we just found out last night that Liz’s grandfather passed away, which is very sad indeed.  Liz will be going home to Scranton for the funeral, so if everyone would please send her loving and strengthening vibes, that would be great.  He was 93, had a penchant for fedoras, and apparently actually rode the rails in his youth.  He lived more life than most people, and if you’ve gotta go, that would be the way to do it – after a long, bustling life like that.

However, there is happy news: LIZ IS MOVING BACK INTO THE COMMUNE IN JANUARY! We will be very excited to have her back.  And it will be just in time for her birthday!  🙂

ADAM has been leading a very happy dating life.   In other news, he’s been writing up a storm as he works on his Faulknerian story project.

He’s also joined a writing workshop group which was the brainchild Commune Cohort, JEAN, which also includes TERESA and ALEX.  The four of them have already had a really successful first meeting, and are meeting again next weekend.  Pay attention, bitches.  It’s the new Algonquin Round Table. (and by the way, the new catchphrase is “Whose B do I have to J to get a story published around here!”  Thank you, Teresa, for your colorful use of language.)

Speaking of TERESA, she too has been writing up a storm, and has taken a hiatus from non-fiction about pop culture in favor of her fiction projects, namely a novel, a short story in its final stages of revision, and The Pack.  She plans on hibernating this winter.  Actually, it’s more accurate to say she’ll be in a cocoon until spring, when she will emerge as a butterfly….that…has…stories…written and stuff….She continues to try to keep her day job from devouring her soul.  Every day is a battle.  Yesterday evening, Adam accompanied her to the Fashion For Dummies book party, which she attended in support of the book’s author, and her friend, Pierre Lehu. They planned  their own future book parties as they hobnobbed with publishing mucky-mucks.  Teresa spoke to a certain editor who had expressed interest in a non-fiction book idea she had, and the editor told her how she could refine it to make it more salable.  Editor seems not full of bullshit and actually interested.  Teresa is cautiously hopeful.

LINDSAY has been living and breathing the two little children she’s homeschooling.  She’s been having a bit of trouble with the older boy in particular, which has been a bit discouraging for her.  But the parents are trying to figure out how to provide her with the help she needs, and they value her tremendously.  Now, Lindsay’s just wondering when all that travel she was promised is supposed to be starting.  Life is getting a bit stifling for her in Liz’s tiny room, and as she was never supposed to be there for this long, she’s taken to breaking out of it by sleeping in the living room.  Soon, there will be Italy and Hong Kong, though, right?  Right??

DIANA and SEBASTIEN have become the house’s resident old people, going to bed at 8PM, waking up at the butt-crack of dawn, and cooking meals together as they discuss butter’s many fascinating uses.  🙂  Of course, their crazy schedules are due to their jobs.  And they can still be heard having sex in their apartment, so if they are indeed old people, at least their hip replacements are functional.  They seem to be going strong!  What’s it been…over 5 months-ish?  Way to make a sublet work for you, Sebastien!  😉

BRIAN seems to have adapted nicely to life in the house, though he only emerges from his room rarely, as he spends a lot of time in there working, because he’s the only one in the house who’s actually EARNING A LIVING from his writing.  Yup, he’s finished that book on trustafarianism that he was working on, and he continues to write for a great kids’ website even as he’s hobnobbing with TV producers and giving them his resume on a roll of toilet paper.  Don’t ask.

Tune in next time for more exciting adventures (or at least some pretty cool updates) from The Commune!

Dispatch From The Commune #11 – The Fallen Off the Face Of the Earth Edition

lemmunaid-suk

Ladies and gentlemen, the Itinerant Artists are indeed still here.  In fact, the reason why they haven’t been updating the blog as often is because they’ve all got excitingtiringfabulouscrazyhectictransitional things going on.  Here’s the scoop:

LIZ thought she was getting her cast off a couple of weeks ago.  She thought wrong.  Or, rather, the doctors changed their minds.  Now, Liz has to leave the cast on through at least October.  Her “My Cast Is Off!” party at Ginger’s turned into a “Help Me Drown My Sorrows” party.  And drown them she did.  However, Liz is more mobile now than she’s ever been before, and she’s been able to get out to things like the DOCTOR HORRIBLE’S SING-A-LONG BLOG SING-A-LONG AT SYMPHONY SPACE WITH A Q&A WITH JOSS WHEDON MODERATED BY IRA GLASS with the housemates!  She’s also been taking one business course so far at Queensboro via Teh Interwebz, so she hasn’t let her leg deter her from getting back to school.  Meanwhile, EMILY has been super-stressed as a new law school student.  She’s hanging in there, but it’s been rough going so far.

Aside from ADAM’S luck with the ladies (he had another successful OKCupid date recently), Adam has been working crazy hours, getting sick, and having Commune Cohorts RYAN and ULLI come and visit. (PS – THOSE two crazy kids are getting married!  Congratulations!)

LINDSAY has been spending her days quelling temper tantrums, learning Italian, and building volcanoes.  She’s a month into her new job as a private home teacher to two small children, and has experienced a lot of good, and a lot of bad.  But the traveling this gig promised is yet to come, and she is definitely excited about that.  Also, there’s the wine.  Lots, and lots of wine.  Her new boss is a wine entrepreneur, and he sends Lindsay home with $50+ bottles.  Don’t worry – that’s the “cheap” stuff, so it’s OK.

TERESA’S job has been eating her alive, and she, too, has been working long hours.  Up until now, she hasn’t had the time nor the energy to pursue her writing as she’d like, but motivation is finally starting to become greater than her weariness.  She will be hearing about her placement in the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction contest when winners are announced October 8th, she’s taking part in a writing workshop group with Adam and Commune Cohorts, JEAN and ALEX, and she’s still working furiously on The Pack.  (yeah, it’s on IMDB now.  Check out the sexy opening credits sequence.  That means it’s on like Donkey Kong smoking a bong with Cheech and Chong while hitting a gong singing Let’s Get it On.)

SEBASTIAN and DIANA have both been working crazy hours, too.  They’re both doing fairly well, though, when they’re not sleeping or working (or making whoever’s in the livingroom need to turn the volume on the TV waaaay up).  They still find time to cook elaborate dinners, and work on household projects.  Sebastien recently purchased a drill for one such project and said “I bought a drill.  I guess that means I officially live here.” Gee, ya THINK?!  He’s also finally gotten a wi-fi card for his laptop, thus severing his last tie to the main floor of the house.  He and his laptop are now officially ensconced in the basement with Diana.  Yet another person who was “crashing” here has become a permanent resident.  So far, that’s three of the seven people who lay claim to this place – Liz, Lindsay, and Sebastian.  And speaking of people taking up “temporary” residence here at The Commune…

BRIAN has been getting a lot of writing done, and even finished a book he’s been paid to write on trustifarianism.  He spends most of his time home working on various writing projects, though sometimes he’ll peek his head out just long enough to watch some TV with whomever’s in the livingroom, to chat with Lindsay, with whom he seems to have become BFFs, and to regale the housemates with tales of his successful dates.  Right now, he’s deciding between a hot geek dude and a hot black dude.  Book advance?  Dates with hot men?  Some people lead really difficult lives.

And that’s it for now!  Tune in next week (or, more likely, next month) for the next Dispatch!

Dispatch From The Commune #10 – Labor Day Weekend Edition

Rosie labor day

This has been a time of whirligig activity for our favorite Itinerant Artists and their Commune Cohorts…

LIZ has been healing up nicely, and in addition to the progress her leg is making, she too is making progress.  She’s recently been accepted to Queensboro College, where she will begin classes this fall!  Liz is going to be a student once again, which shouldn’t bother EMILY, as she’s recently begun law school and has already had her nose buried in several books for the past week or so.  So as Liz continues to heal, they’ll both be in Emily’s new Brooklyn Heights apartment doing homework together.  Awwww, isn’t that cute?

ADAM is back to the grindstone at his job after a weeklong roadtrip up and down the West Coast, and a trip with Teresa (and later Lindsay) to Michigan and Chicago.  Nature and large trees do him good!  (his friends from high school do him better, apparently!)

LINDSAY spent a good portion of the summer in weddings.  She spent a week in Ecuador to be a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding,  which was made less fun by the fact that the groom’s Ecuadorian parents took the reins of the wedding, making it much bigger than anyone was able to handle.  After that, she joined Adam, Teresa, and several other Florin (Adam, Lindsay, and Diana’s high school clique) Commune Cohorts to be an attendant at Alana and Rob’s wedding.  Now, she’s begun her new job as a governess, er, private teacher to the children of a wealthy wine entrepreneur.  As this is a new experience for all involved, there have been slight difficulties, but this opportunity is a great one, and Lindsay is approaching the challenges with gusto the way she always does.  However, she won’t be traveling as much as originally thought.  At least, not initially.

TERESA has been dealing with increasing insanity at work.  What has been keeping her sane, however, is working on her webseries, The Pack.  Episodes 1-3 were filmed this summer, and Episode 1 has been entered into the NBC Digital Shorts contest.  So far, so good!  Now, she’s in the process of making big plans for the series, which will make themselves apparent in the coming months.

DIANA and SEBASTIEN are sharing job karma lately!  Diana has been promoted (again!) at the restaurant where she works, and Sebastien has just gotten a new job in his chosen field!  They’ve also been doing a LOT of camping and traveling this summer.  They’re starting to eat the same food and look alike, too.  Just don’t tell Sebastien you read that here, because he’ll be mad.  🙂

Lastly, WE’RE EXPECTING A NEW ITINERANT ARTIST TODAY! Teresa’s friend, BRIAN is moving in this afternoon, and will be subletting Lindsay’s room while Lindsay sublets Liz, keeping it warm for her until she returns.  Stay tuned for more information on the new housemate, and more action and adventure from the Revolving Door Commune!

Dispatch From The Commune #9 – Keep On Keepin’ On

Keep on Truckin'

Since the last Dispatch…

LIZ broke her leg and lost a sister in law.  This is covered elsewhere in the blog, so nothing else need be mentioned except that she’s getting wonderful care at EMILY’S and is hanging in there as best she can.

ADAM’S internet experiment is going off without a hitch (minus a 10 minute lapse so he could spread the Fallen Comrade Fund link to his online network).  During that lapse, even though he’d only been off the internet for 10 days, he got a headache and said that it hurt his eyes to be clicking back and forth between windows.  When off the internet, he has greater concentration, and he’s gotten more reading and writing done.  There may be something to this!  He is currently on a week-long road trip from Vancouver to San Fransisco…

TERESA has been a whirligig of activity!  She’s been scribbling away trying to get (overdue) articles to both Pink Raygun and PopMatters, as well as working on future episodes of The Pack, which begins filming on July 19th!  She also CELEBRATED HER 30TH BIRTHDAY! (Blog entry with photos to come…)

LINDSAY has been preparing for her new teaching job by scouring every book she can get her hands on re: home schooling and/or Italian.  She also baked Teresa an amazing Bill Compton (from True Blood) birthday cake, and camped out overnight in Central Park with a couple hundred other people and landed free tickets to see the closing performance of the Delacorte production of Twelfth Night, starring Anne Hathaway.  Lindsay and Teresa went to see it and both enjoyed it immensely.  They now have The Commune all to themselves as Adam is away on vacation, Liz is at Emily’s, and they hardly see DIANA and SEBASTIEN anyway.

Hopefully, The Commune will still be standing in a week.  🙂

Also, The Commune’s refrigerator may or may not be broken…and the BIG question:

Will the Itinerant Artists’ landlord fix Diana’s shower stall BEFORE going away for a month-long summer vacation in Cyprus?!

Tune in next time to find out!

Dispatch From The Commune #8: Wanderlust

old-world-map

Life for the Itinerant Artists has been lively since the last Dispatch…

ADAM went home to Michigan for a not-so-happy reason.  Namely, the funeral of his mother’s boyfriend, who lost his battle with cancer.  He helped his mother deal with the loss, and there was even a memorial sail on the boat she and her boyfriend had bought use of for the summer.   His return from Michigan, however, was a lot happier, as he came back and went on another awesome OKCupid date!  That’s two, count ’em, two ladies he’s got on the line!  OKCupid is where it’s at, kids!  Tell your friends.  Preferably your hot friends.  So we can date them.  🙂

Now, he’s conducting an interesting experiment!  ADAM IS OFFLINE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JULY.  No email, no Google-searching, no Facebook, NOTHING.  He wants to see how he adapts and changes his thinking, much in the same way Teresa wanted to when she gave up talking for a weekend.  So, if you know Adam, and want to contact him, you’ll have to call, text, or send a carrier pigeon!

TERESA went to Philly last weekend for Wizard World Philly, what was once a huge comic con and is now going through its death rattle.  She was there volunteering for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which is a great organization that protects First Amendment rights in the comic book industry.  However, the amazingness of that weekend had nothing to do with WWP at all.  Teresa was staying with Lisa and John, editors of Pink Raygun, and went to a party one of their friends was throwing that Saturday night, where she met a lovely young man who ended up showing her a very lovely evening.  She hopes for other lovely evenings, but is fine with it if it ends up being just the one.  It was a happy moment in time.  Upon return from Philly, she plunged head-first into intense writing for, among other things, The Pack, the webseries she’s writing for Pareidolia Films.  (bookmark the site and check back often!)

The Commune now houses an honest-to-goodness governess!  LINDSAY has just gotten a job as a private teacher for two young children of a wealthy couple who have taken the children out of school to keep the family together when they travel on business.  They are a family who believe highly in education, but not necessarily in the standardized educational system.  Lindsay will not only be teaching the children here, but will be traveling with them abroad to places like ITALY, MEXICO, AND HONG KONG!  She will also be learning Italian, as the dad and kids are Italian and they’d like it if she could speak to them in it.  So, Lindsay is now a jet-setting Mary Poppins!

Meanwhile, LIZ has been having a stressful time.  She was in Scranton this weekend for her sister-in-law’s baby shower, and it ended up being a jumble of family health emergencies starting with her stepmother, and ending with her sister-in-law who had to have an early C-section and is now in critical condition in the ICU.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers if you’re reading this.

However, the news isn’t all bad.  Liz is very happy about being a first-time Aunt to a new and beautiful little Mia!  Future Itinerant Artist In Training, perhaps?

Lastly, DIANA and SEBASTIEN are adorable as ever, and getting incredibly domestic, cooking elaborate meals together just about every night.  Diana’s mother is in town visiting, and has brought fixins for a big Tex-Mex dinner for The Commune on Sunday.  We wonder what she thinks of Diana’s new beau….

And that’s it from The Commune this week.  Tune in next week – same Revolving Door Time, same Revolving Door Channel.  Approximately.  You know, if there’s time for us to post an entry.  Or whatever.

Dispatch From The Commune #7: Up and Down and Up Again

condolences

First of all, two of our Itinerant Artists have experienced losses in their families recently.  They’re both fine, and The Commune has been giving them hugs this week, but we also ask that anyone reading this keep them in your prayers and thoughts and send your good vibes their way.  Thanks.  Much love and many hugs from The Commune to their respective families.  We wish you all the strength you need to get through this difficult time.

————————————————–

No. None of us drew this.

No. None of us drew this.

This has been a strangely up and down week for the Itinerant Artists.  Both TERESA and ADAM had Disappointments in Dateville this past week.  But, while Adam’s disappointment was merely a matter of scheduling and the lady (whom he’s already been out with before) is clearly still interested, Teresa’s first foray into online dating didn’t go nearly as well.  While she had a good time on her date, she doesn’t think any more will come of it.  The silver lining?  Her first online date is over, thereby making subsequent dates easier and less nerve-wracking.  Apparently.

There was some short-lived drama in the house as LINDSAY and Adam got into a big blow-up over their mutually purchased box fan of all things, but that situation has since been smoothed over as both parties realized that the fight was ridiculous to begin with!

Teresa tried going to Lindsay’s cupcake-baking trainer, but after getting lost in Brooklyn trying to meet up with Lindsay there for her first session, she realized that she’d rather excersise closer to her home.  For free.

It hasn’t been all down and out though.  Example: EMILY’S been coming over to satisfy her new Star Trek addiction.  She’s been watching Next Generation episodes and loving it!  She just may be becoming a Trekkie…

And speaking of Emily.  We’ll have another lawyer in our midst in a couple of years!  Emily just got accepted to Brooklyn Law, meaning that she WON’T BE LEAVING US IN THE FALL!  There has been much Huzzah-ing in the land tonight.  Just this evening there was a celebratory dinner at Igloo, one of The Commune’s favorite local spots, attended by Emily, LIZ, LORI, Adam, and Teresa.  It was there that Emily infected all of their brains with an addictive game where you pretty much just insert the word “vagina” into movie titles for humor value.  Examples:

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Vagina

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Vagina

Y Tu Mama Vagina

The Land Before Vagina

The Manchurian Vagina.

Go ahead.  TRY not to come up with any of your own.  You can’t HELP yourself, can you?!

Dispatch From The Commune #6: They Love the Nightlife, They Have to Boogie, On the Disco Round…Yeah.

club dancer

The Itinerant Artists have been extreme night owls this week!

LIZ, as usual, has been doing a lot of flouncing about town with EMILY and LORI.  However, she’s also been seeing Commune Cohort, EVAN, who’s returned to town having completed her first year at law school!  We haven’t seen much of her, and are hoping she will be around more this summer!  (Yes.  Evan is a she.)  There’s a lawyer-in-training among us, people!  You know what THAT means!  The second she finishes school and becomes the awesome defense attorney we know she will be…we’re all COMMITTING CRIME! Mark your calendars.  2011: Revolving Door Commune Crime Spree.  You heard it here first.  (And really, where else would you hear about it?)

ADAM has been working overtime!  It’s competition time over at the children’s ballroom dance education company he works for (name withheld to keep Google off our asses), and so he’s been out late lugging equipment, judging, DJ-ing, and watching young’uns fox trot.  How cute!

LINDSAY’S been out and about, socializing and baking cupcakes with her personal trainer.  Leave it to Lindt to find the one personal trainer in New York City who will bake cupcakes with you and insist you have one.

TERESA’S become obsessed with Lady Gaga and recently realized that she aspires to become a Neil Gaiman/Felicia Day/Lady Gaga hybrid.  Stay tuned to see how THAT turns out.  To prepare, she’s had a week of rubbing elbows and hobnobbing with actors, writers, and rock stars…  More from her on that later!

Remember those housemates that were circling each other?  Circling has ceased, and The Eagle has mothereffing LANDED, bitches!  One can only imagine they don’t mind being mentioned on the blog (they’ve both seen the previous mention and haven’t ripped my head off about it), because if they did, they wouldn’t be so LOUD.  That’s one of the quirks of living at The Commune.  Very thin walls.  And floors.  And ceilings.  Everyone knows everything everyone is doing.  People ignore, block out, and turn up the TV as needed.  Or alternately, there are guessing games about activities and positions.  It’s something we get used to living in the jumbled, bustling way we do.  The other quirk of living at The Commune?  Being mentioned in a blog.  Heh.

Lastly, there was the house field trip to the Girlyman concert at the Highline Ballroom this week!  That outing gets its own post, complete with photos!

Dispatch From The Commune #5: Love Connections?

hippies summer of love

Love, or at least lust, is in the air for our Itinerant Artists lately:

One Itinerant Artist had one romantic door close only to have another one open.  A door that seems to be the most fraught with possibility yet!

Two of our Itinerant Artists seem to be circling EACH OTHER!  Will they, or won’t they?  (Or have they already??)

Another of our IAs is discovering that the “online dating thing” isn’t as creepy as originally thought.  In fact, there are some very interesting possibilities!

Could 2009 be The Commune’s “Summer of Love?”  Stay tuned.
