Happy Labor Day!

Today is a day during which we celebrate labor by sitting on our lazy asses and not doing anything, and laugh at other countries whose citizens are all working today!

Of course, this is to make up for the fact that ours is one of the most workaholic countries in the world.  Ours is country in which two weeks is a “long” vacation that most wouldn’t dream of taking all at once – because there’s work to do.  Ours is a country in which even when we’re ON vacation, we bring our laptops and Blackberries so that we can work as we travel.

Here at the Revolving Door Commune, we believe that vacations are just as important as our working lives.  We believe that when you go on vacation, it should be YOU time, not “let me make sure nothing’s going on in the office” time.  We believe that work is a PART of what defines you, and not even the most important part.  We believe that vacations should be taken seriously and more often, not because we’re lazy, but because in order for a person to do anything well, they have to be at their best, and one can’t be at their best if they are stressed, run-down, and unhappy in their personal life.

So, Happy Labor Day.  ENJOY this and every other vacation.  And if you’re boss ever gives you the stink-eye for asking for a couple of weeks off in the summer, hold your ground.  Because whether they want to admit it or not, you taking that vacation is going to make you a better employee.  So they can just suck it up and deal with the fact that someone else will have to send those emails for a few days.
